The year was 2003 and I was literally hanging by a thread.
At the time I was a Youth Pastor at Faith
Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Now there is no question that I loved what I was doing. Those kids meant the world to me.
But I was completely BROKE.
No -- scratch that. I was MORE than broke. I was over $75,000 in debt.
When you're that kind of in debt just waking up can be a chore, even if it's to get up to do something you love, because the stress is often overwhelming.
In fact, back then money worries pervaded my every thought.
At nearly every turn I thought about money and often dreamed of some 'big break' where I could pull myself out if the financial hole I was stuck in...
Imagine friends asking you out to lunch, and you are afraid to say, "Yes", because you don't think you can afford the $7 for the special, or you start rummaging around for change just to top off your car with some gas to get you home from work.
I tell you...
Yes... it almost seems weird to me that it was even my life. Today I live VERY comfortably and I can afford to take care of my loved ones the way I always wanted to... the way they deserve to be taken care of.
In fact, here's a peek at some recent earnings I generated online (and you won't believe how freakin' easy it was):

As you can see, money is no problem at all these days, and you'll be shocked by how simple it is to stuff your own accounts full of cash (while working less -- WAY less)!
I now have more money than I could ever need and most importantly I have ALL the free time I desire -- and you can bet that I'm giving back -- now, helping those kids I once counseled is far easier, because I have nothing else clouding my mind.
Today my time is theirs.
So yeah, as you might imagine, all that stuff that happened a few years back just seems like some crazy dream to me now... but you know something...
Yes, that's right. My first success... the success that led me to generating millions online was something that I fell face-first into. I had heard about all the people making money online so I decided to give it a try.
Clearly it couldn't hurt me or my current situation.
The first thing I did was to locate a mentor that had 'been there and done that'. I wanted to shorten my learning curve and increase my earning curve, so I wasn't about to waste time.
My mentor's mantra was always, "Success in marketing stems from solving people's problems." So that's what I did. I helped solve people's problems.
And it was not long before I was making over $90,000 a year online. Enough to help start scratching and clawing my way out of debt and significantly more than I was making at my day job, so I left to pursue the Internet full time.
Now, while I was making great money (or what I thought was great money at the time) I was spending 10... 12... sometimes 15 hours a day, often 6 or 7 days a week working on my business.
Because I was handling
everything. I was the website designer, the copywriter, the tech
guy, the support person, the search engine guy, the content creator, and on and on and on.
One day I found that my shopping cart was not functioning properly. And by not functioning properly I mean I was totally unable to process my orders.
So, I began to try to repair it myself.
15 hours later I was no further ahead than when I first began. I contacted a marketing friend of mine and he recommended that I get a programmer to handle it.
So, I found someone that had the experience to fix my problems and 1 hour later I received an email that told me my issue was fixed... total cost to me: $150.
I was both thrilled and irritated with myself. Thrilled because my problem was solved by someone else. Irritated because I probably lose several hundred dollars by not having my shopping cart for the 15 hours I tried to tinker with it.
Well, I sent off the $150 payment and this programmer replied back to me, "Thank you for your business Mr. Mills. Is there anything else that we can do for you?"
Half-joking I replied, "Yes, you can get me to #1 on Google for all my important keywords."
My jaw just about hit the floor when I received his response... "No problem."
6 months later I was #1 on Google for 24 (yes 24) of my top keywords. The number of unique visitors streaming to my site every single day was ridiculous.
And even better, hundreds of people per month were contacting me for more information about my several-thousand-dollar program. I wasn't chasing them down...
No, they were chasing me, literally with credit cards in hand.
Within a year, my income more than tripled, all thanks to that half-joking email I sent to the programmer that fixed my shopping cart.
I had stumbled upon the most amazing discovery of my online career, entirely by accident, and I became completely hooked on outsourcing.
